The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of issues concerning the Aravalli range and has listed the matter for hearing on Monday. The Bench noted that an earlier Constitution Bench has already authoritatively defined the scope and extent of the “Aravalli range and hills”, making the issue one of compliance and enforcement, not identification. The Court will now examine alleged violations and regulatory lapses in light of existing judicial directions.The Court’s intervention follows public protests and environmental concerns arising from a revised definition of the Aravalli hills, a region long recognised for its ecological importance, including its role in preventing desertification and sustaining groundwater levels.
